Item is a cabinet card photograph of William Robert Bell seated in centre of image at a writing desk (with desk at oblique angle to camera) and soldiers standing on either side of him. Bell holds a writing instrument in one hand (posed over a piece of paper), and a sword in other other, while his military cap rests on the table. Soldier on proper left stands with one hand to his hip and the other hand resting on the hilt of his sword. Soldier on proper right is leaning one hand on Bell's chair back and the other hand on his sword.

Item exhibits significant handling wear, staining and a breakdown of the backing along edges and in corners.
Approximately 11 cm from top edge and along proper left side of item is an approximately 4 cm long tear.
Proper right corner has torn away, predominantly affecting the backing, but none of the persons in the image.
On recto, proper right edge approximately 9 cm from edge is a stain that extends 7.5 cm into image.
Middle proper right edge of backing has small area of loss that is adjacent to an area of weakness in the backing.
Verso shows signs of handling wear and staining, with the left and right edges also exhibiting foxing and acid migration.
