History
Clay J. Serby was born on February 15, 1950 in Theodore, Saskatchewan to John and Sophie Serby. He was raised on the family farm, which he currently owns and operates with his brother. Serby holds a certificate in Social Work.
Prior to entering politics, Serby worked as a social worker in Prince Albert and Yorkton. He served as alderman in Yorkton from 1986 to 1991 and was Executive Director of the Society for the Involvement of Good Neighbours in Yorkton from 1980 to 1991.
Serby was first elected to the Saskatchewan Legislature in 1991 as the New Democratic Party MLA for the Yorkton Constituency. He was re-elected in 1995, 1999 and 2003.
Serby served in the Roy Romanow cabinet as Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Property Management Corporation (1995-1997); Minister Responsible for Liquor and Gaming Authority (1995-1997); Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Government Insurance (1995-1997); Minister of Highways and Transportation (1997); Minister of Health (1997-1998); Minister of Education (1998-1999); Minister of Municipal Affairs, Culture and Housing (1999-2000); Minister of Agriculture and Food (2000-2001).
Serby served in the Lorne Calvert cabinet as Deputy Premier (2001-2007). He also held the following portfolios: Minister of Agriculture and Food (2001-2002); Minister Responsible for Rural Revitalization (2001-2002); Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization (2002-2004); Minister of Rural Revitalization (2004); Minister of Rural Development (2005-2006); Minister of Regional Economic and Co-operative Development (2006-2007); and Minister of Property Management (2007).
Serby announced that he would not seek re-election on September 7, 2007 due to health reasons. He acted as co-chair for the NDP's 2007 election campaign. Serby continues (2009) to reside in the Yorkton area.
Serby has two children: Kirsty and Stacey.
