Diary of Staff Sargeant W.F. Stewart, Midland Battalion

Typewritten copy of an original diary kept by Staff Sargeant W.F. Stewart from March 29, 1885 to June 31, 1885 during his active service with the Midland Battalion during the North-West Rebellion. The diary was entitled Notes of Rebellion of '85. The typewritten copy was likely made by Lillian M. Torkelson of Weyburn, Saskatchewan.

The file includes copies of two pages, likely from the original diary, that include a hand-drawn sketch of the Northcote and a diagram of the battle site in early May 1885. A letter dated May 23, 1966 to Miss Torkelson from Edward McCourt of the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon regarding the typewritten copy is included.

Peter Hourie reminiscences

Typescript reminiscences of Peter Hourie, a Métis who worked as the interpreter for General Middleton during the North-West Rebellion of 1885. Subjects include; the flight and capture of Louis Riel; the Hourie family; prophecy; medicine; Tom Hourie; pemican; the Marquis of Lorne; the Franklin Expedition; buffalo hunting; and the repatriation of the Indians. (pages 56, 61-69 are missing).
