Louis Harrington Lewry was born April 16, 1919 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to Phillip E. and Mary Louisa Lewry, with three brothers and one sister. After completing his elementary and high school education in Moose Jaw (at King George School and Central Collegiate, respectively) Lewry took a job with local radio station CHAB in 1938. At the same time as his work with CHAB, from 1946 to 1949 he was employed with the Regina Leader - Post news bureau. Lewry would also write a weekly column in the paper the Western Spotlight and worked for the Moose Jaw Times-Herald. During this time, a colleague at CHAB the moniker "Scoop."
Lewry began his political career by serving as an alderman / councilor for Moose Jaw from 1948 and 1949, followed by his initial term as mayor from 1950 to 1956. He next served as Member of Parliament for Moose Jaw Lake Centre (under the banner of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, CCF, party) from June 10, 1957 to March 30, 1958. From 1958 to 1964, Lewry fulfilled an appointed to the Local Government Board, the overseer of municipal government 1964. Lewry re-entered municipal politics and would serve as mayor of Moose Jaw from 1965 to 1970 and then again from 1983 until his retirement in October 1988. After losing the mayoral race in 1970, he briefly became an inspector with the Liquor License Commission, followed by a return to the Local Government Board until 1982.
Lewry was a member of and served on numerous local committees and boards. He was a charter member of the Moose Jaw Kinsmen Club, a charter member and president of the Wild Animal Park Society, he served on the Celebrate Saskatchewan Committee, Canada Day Committee, Chamber of Commerce, the Canadian Numismatic Association, the Canadian Wooden Money Society and director of The Moose Jaw Thing, a society to promote the name of Moose Jaw. He was also president of the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (1956-1957), a public school trustee (1966-1971, and chair 1969 to 1971).
In recognition of his long and distinguished career in public service through his time in the media, as well as civic politics, Member of Parliament and member of the Saskatchewan Local Government Board, Lewry was invested as a member of the Order of Canada on October 15, 1980. Also in 1980, Lewry was also awarded the City of Moose Jaw Medal of Merit.
Lewry married Jean Rosalthe Munroe on December 18, 1942 and together they had five (5) children, thirteen (13) grandchildren, and seven (7) great grandchildren. He passed away on February 24, 1992 in Moose Jaw.
