Histórico
Anatoly Karpov won the 1969 world junior championship in chess and after Bobby Fischer refused to defend his world title, Karpov became the world champion by default in 1975. He would defend the championship in 1978 and 1982 against Victor Korchnoi, but in 1984-1985 his defense against G. K. Kasparov ended in controversy. His match against Kasparov began with 48 games played over a six month period without a victor and resulted in both players exhibiting physical and psychological strain and as a result the Fédération International des Échecs [FIDE; International Chess Federation] decided to suspend the match. After another six months recuperation, the match began from scratch and Kasparov came out victorious. Karpov managed to regain the world title in 1993 and after Kasparov established the Professional Chess Association (PCA) in 1994, Karpov continued to play under the apparatus of the FIDE winning their world title in 1994. He successfully defended his title in 1996 and 1998.
