Childhood Lost: The Residential School Experience

Video production entitled Childhood Lost: The Residential School Experience, produced by Doug Cuthand of Blue Hill Productions, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The video tells the stories of four individuals who were sent to residential schools as young children.

The four individuals interviewed are as follows: Wally Simaganis, who was sent to residential school in the 1930s; Bernice Simaganis, who attended residential school in the 1940s; Ted Quewezance, who attended residential school in the 1960s; and Deanna Ledoux, who attended residential school in the 1980s.

Audio interview with Louise Trottier Moine of Val Marie, Saskatchewan conducted by Alayne Sewell for the Big Muddy and Grasslands Oral History Project. Moine describes her schooling at the Lebret Residential School run by Oblate priests, her working experiences mostly as a domestic labourer, homesteading in the Val Marie area, the town of Val Marie and its development. A visitation report and agreement are included.

Interviews conducted by Gillian Hanley and Bob Ellis for the Chapters of Saskatchewan's Spoken History oral history project, an Opportunities for Youth Project conducted by students with financial assistance from the federal government . Brief summaries are available in the Audio transcript file.

Vera Dobbin, a teacher born in 1898, discusses her work as a teacher and matron at Cote Mission and File Hills Residential School (two Indigenous schools in the Kamsack and Balcarres, Saskatchewan districts). May Froom, a homemaker born in 1885, recalls her experiences living in Regina from 1906 with comments about living expenses, entertainment and the impact of the Depression and World War I. Jessie Atchinson, a farmer born in 1890, discusses her experiences homesteading in the Southey district and running a boarding house in Regina. Violet Palmer (born 1897) talks about life in Regina in the early days. Della E. Klink (born 1890) discusses her experiences homesteading in the Pangman district and living in Yellow Grass. Includes comments on community activities and her husband's involvement in the farm movement and the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF).
