SPC's A.L. Cole Generating Plant, Saskatoon. #5 turbine is completely enclosed and is cooled by hydrogen gas which transfers heat more efficiently than air. The turbine converts steam energy to electrical energy as the expanding steam rotates the turbine spindle and generator shaft at 3,600 RPM. The electricity is carried by heavy cables to the transformer outside the plant, where the voltage is increased to 72,000 volts and distributed to the northern integrated system.
