In Memoriam: George Edward Brewer M.M.

Illustrated booklet regarding George Edward Brewer (1895-1917) of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry compiled by Sandra Pendlington of Scotland to commemorate the 100th anniversary on his death at Passchendaele. Brewer was a British citizen who was working on his uncle's farm near Verna, Saskatchewan (near Craven, Saskatchewan) when he enlisted in the Canadian Army.

Records created, accumulated and used by Jacob Miller M.S.M. of Neudorf, Saskatchewan (January 19, 1891 - October 10, 1963) relating to his service with the 45th Overseas Battalion of the Canadian Army from 1914 to 1919, during the First World War. Included are photocopies and digital scans of: correspondence; attestation papers; diary entries; photographs; a newspaper clipping; biographical sketches for local history books; and Miller's memoir entitled, "Beyond My Grasp". During his service in the Great War, Miller was posted to the First Canadian Mounted Rifles and took part in battles at Ypres, Somme, Cambrai, Monchy, Passchendale, Amiens, Hill 70, and Vimy Ridge. For his service, Miller was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. A small volume of the records also pertains to Miller's career, first as an employee of the Canadian Pacific Railway and then as postmaster for Neudorf, and to his marriage to Christina (Litzenberger) Miller.

Memoir, photographs of W.D. Roberts

Digital copies of a memoir, written by William D. Roberts entitled, "From North Wales by Easy Stages via Virginia, Wisconsin and Saskatchewan, to Victoria, Vancouver Island" and accompanying photographs. Roberts details his experiences while homesteading in the Medstead, Saskatchewan district, serving in the First World War, during his career as a railway mail clerk, and other life experiences from 1896 to 1981, shortly before his death. Photographs depict Roberts in 1915, 1928 and in the 1930s.

Item component is a transcription of articles and selective reproduction of advertisments that appeared in the Saskatchewan Herald newspaper from 1915. Information reflects both activities on the home front, as well as some news from overseas. Component appears on pages 36 to 38.

Oh, oh, oh, it's a lovely war! One nurse's story

Item component is a description Gladys Matheson Crim papers that are located at the Saskatchewan Archives and the importance of their contents for an understanding of the life of a young nurse working in England and France during World War One. Component appears on pages 6 to 10.

Article includes a reproduction of Gladys Matheson Crim's diary entry for November 11, 1918.

Item component is a transcription of W. R. Motherwell's article "Thoughts for the New Year" that reports on wartime activities in Saskatchewan and which appeared in The Nor-west Farmer in 1917. Transcription is preceded by a brief description to place the article in historical contex. Component appears on pages 34 to 35.

Article is supplemented by a reproduction of a portrait of W. R. Motherwell; and a poster showing a field of wheat, a grain elevator and a train along with the caption "Canada's grain cannot be sold unless you buy victory bonds."

Terrible in the telling : Excerpts from J. S. Wood's World War I log

Item component is a description of the experiences of James Stuart Wood as expressed in his daily journal during World War One, in particular in Egypt during 1915, France and Belgium in 1916 and 1917. Included are the battles of the Somme, Ancrea, Vimy Ridge, and his travel back to Canada. Also included a brief description of controversy that rose as chief of the Saskatoon Public Library concerning the acquisition of German books. Component appears on pages 40 to 47.

Article supplemented by a photograph of James Stuart Wood as a young man in England; an excerpt from the diary showing a handdrawn map of the Suez Canel defence areas; and a handdrawn map of a trench configuation where he was stationed in France.

Segment on Robert Grierson Coombe provides a brief description of Coombe and the records held in the Saskatchewan Archives. Segment is supplemented by an image of the portrait of a seated Coombe in his military uniform that is displayed at the Saskatchewan Archives' Regina Hillsdale location.

Segment on The VC is a description of the of the Victoria Cross medal that was awarded posthumously to Robert Coombe and the associated records held at the Saskatchewan Archives. Segment is supplemented by a transcription of a letter Coombe's widow received from Ronald O. Wheatley - who had served with Coombe. In addition there is an image of the Victoria Cross, and a photograph of the ceremony in which Mrs. Coombe received her husband's Victoria Cross.

Segment on Great War era newspaper digitization describes the collaboration project between Saskatchewan History Online and the Saskatchewan Archives to digitize and make available the Archives' newspaper collection. Segment is supplemented by an image of the cover for the July 4, 1916 issue of the Moose Jaw Daily News (Home edition) that show articles on activities occuring at the European front in World War One.

Segment on Archives Week identifies activities held in Saskatoon and Regina by the Saskatchewan Archives in partnership with the Saskatchewan Council of Archives and Archivists (SCAA) - including the Saskatoon Hertitage Festival, celebrity reader events, and presentation on Christina Bateman fonds. Segmented is supplemented by images showing Donald Johnson of the Sasktchewan Archives cutting a special cake for the atteendees of the Regina celebrity reading event; and two photographs of attendees at the Regina celebrity reading.
