Lands Grant Files series

This series consists records that document the activities related to the issuing of grants on patented land for the North-West Territories and the Province of Saskatchewan. Patented land refers to land for which title has previously been granted; the Crown 'grants' title to the land to the new owner. Activities reflected in the records include the management of enquiries, application forms, payments, agreements, and recording the disposition of lands.

The types of records included are original and copies of correspondence, agreements, survey reports, comparative land reports, announcements of land availability, technical drawings, appraisal and inspection reports, registration abstracts, survey photographs and drawings, tax notices, wills and other documentation.

Records in this series are listed consecutively by grant number within collections. The archival holdings for grant files are incomplete.

Lands Transfer Files series

This series consists of records that document the activities related to the issuing of transfers on patented land for the North-West Territories and the Province of Saskatchewan. Saskatchewan Homestead Records Special Files series

This series consists records created, accumulated and used by the federal Department of the Interior, Dominion Lands Administration (1871-1931), the Saskatchewan Department of Natural Resources, Lands Branch (1930-1944) and Department of Agriculture, Lands Branch (after 1944). Each file pertains to a specific parcel or parcels of land available for settlement after being allocated for disposition under the provisions of the Dominion Lands Act, 1872 (S.C. 1872, c. 23) and The Provincial Lands Act (S.S. 1931, c. 14). These include lands in townsites, school lands surrendered in lieu of other lands selected to reimburse the School Land Endowment, homestead lands converted to grazing leases, and lands held by specific corporate bodies or for specific purposes. A file usually covers period from date of entry until grant of patent, but may include correspondence after patent was granted. Files contain information pertaining to various types of land grants, including homesteads, pre-emptions, time sale purchases, and land reservations.

The types of records included are: applications for entry and for patent; land condition and valuation reports; correspondence; sale deeds and receipts; schedules of land disposition; and maps and township plans.

Administrative and Operational Records of the Office of the Deputy Minister of Agriculture series

This series consists of administrative and operational records created, accumulated and used by the Deputy Minister and Assistant Deputy Minister of the Saskatchewan Department of Agriculture between 1905 and 1987. Some early correspondence in the records extends back to 1892 [see notes].

The records reflect the extensive communication of the office with branches of the department; other government departments; the University of Saskatchewan; agricultural associations, societies, cooperatives and credit unions; and the federal government during the course of departmental administration of programmes, policy development, as well as local, provincial and federal-provincial initiatives in the agricultural sector. Records related to the department's management of Agricultural Rehabilitation and Development Act (ARDA) projects and the Land Utilization Board are also included.

Subject matters covered in the correspondence of the Deputy Minister include the following: farm labour, grazing and community pastures, farm relief, insurance, credit unions, soil conservation, flood control, coal supplies, settlement, grain handling and transportation, agricultural and horticultural societies, exhibitions, branch management, development of legislation, rural municipalities, and royal commissions.

The types of records included are correspondence, memoranda, agendas and minutes, directives, publications, newspaper clippings, legislation, press releases, reports, submissions and speeches. Maps, photographs, architectural and technical drawings are found in the series.

SAFA 172 has been arranged into two sub-series: Non-Numerical Records Classification System; and Numerical Records Classification System. No sub-series assignment has been applied to the records contained in old guides GR 6 and GR 6-2.
