Personal/Family series

This series consists of personal and family records created, accumulated and used by Abram Hoffer. The series includes records relating to Malvaria Investments Inc. and Miller Holdings, two holding companies. Records relating to Hoffer's parents, Clara and Israel Hoffer; his wife, Rose Hoffer; and his children, Miriam, Leonard John and William Hoffer, are included.

The types of records included are correspondence; diplomas and certificates; daily journals; passports; income tax documents; financial records; moving images (home movies on 8 mm film); sound recordings and photographs, including slides of Hoffer family vacations and various family occasions.

Appointment Diaries series

This series consists of Abram Hoffer's daily appointment diaries. The diaries contain information on Hoffer's daily activities, including appointments with patients, speaking engagements, travel plans, meetings, and conferences. The appointment diaries dating from June, 1972 to December, 1982 are located in collection S-A207. The appointment books dating from 1983 to 2004 are located in collection S-A1095.

General Correspondence series

This series consists mainly of incoming and outgoing correspondence between Abram Hoffer and various individuals, organizations and companies with whom he was associated. This association included physicians, scientists, pharmaceutical companies, journal editors and administrators, publishers, medical associations, research institutes, foundations, government agencies, politicians, and colleagues around the world. The files, which reflect the full range of Hoffer's research and medical interests, are arranged alphabetically by personal or corporate name.

A small volume of correspondence was answered by Frances Fuller, CEO of Orthomolecular Vitamin Information Centre Inc.

Miscellaneous Correspondence series

This series consists of Abram Hoffer's incoming and outgoing correspondence with a variety of individuals, organizations and companies around the world relating mainly to the practice of orthomolecular medicine. The records include greeting cards, newspaper clippings, copies of medical records and articles/research papers. Some of the correspondence is answered by Frances Fuller, CEO of the Orthomolecular Vitamin Information Centre.

It appears that once a certain volume of correspondence with a particular correspondent accumulated in a miscellaneous file, an individual file was created for the correspondent. The individual files are located in the General Correspondence series (F 410-3). The correspondence not moved to the General Correspondence series is found here in the Miscellaneous Correspondence series. The records are arranged in alphabetical order by surname or corporate name.

"A" Correspondence With Physicians series

This series consists mainly of correspondence between Dr. Abram Hoffer and other physicians around the world. The correspondence, both incoming and outgoing, is arranged alphabetically by correspondent's surname and is divided into three categories: A-1; A-2; and A-3. "A-1" correspondence is with physicians who have illness, like schizophrenia, within their own families. Most often these physicians are seeking Hoffer's treatment advice or assistance. "A-2" correspondence is with doctors practicing orthomolecular medicine or psychiatry who are typically requesting technical advice. "A-3" correspondence is with physicians who are requesting general information regarding orthomolecular medicine or psychiatry.

Included are original index cards with doctors' names and addresses arranged in alphabetical order and photographs mainly of Dr. Hoffer and other physicians that were forwarded to Hoffer along with the correspondence.

American Schizophrenia Association/Foundation series

This series consists of records created, accumulated and used by Abram Hoffer relating to his involvement with the American Schizophrenia Association/Foundation. The records consist mainly of general correspondence relating to the organization's formation, to Hoffer's participation on the Board of Directors from 1965 to 1970, and to the Association's reorganization into a division of the Huxley Institute for Biosocial Research in 1971. Also included is correspondence with local chapters across the United States and other administrative records, a sound recording and a moving image.

Huxley Institute for Biosocial Research series

This series consists of records created, accumulated and used by Abram Hoffer relating to his involvement with the Huxley Institute for Biosocial Research as a founder of the organization and president. The records also document Hoffer's continued association with the organization until its dissolution in in 1993.

The series includes Hoffer's general correspondence, mainly with the Institute's Executive Director and with officials in local chapters throughout the United States. Also included are Board meeting agendas and minutes, bylaws and other business records.

Saskatchewan Schizophrenia Foundation/Canadian Schizophrenia Foundation/International Schizophrenia Foundation series

This series consists of records created, accumulated and used by Abram Hoffer relating to his involvement with the Saskatchewan Schizophrenia Foundation; the Canadian Schizophrenia Foundation; and the International Schizophrenia Foundation. The records relate to Hoffer's activities as a founder; president; and board member.

The types of records included are correspondence; meeting minutes; reports; financial statements; position applications; publications; photographs and moving images. Includes correspondence with Irwin J. Kahan, executive director of the Canadian Schizophrenia Foundation, and with various chapters of the Canadian Schizophrenia Foundation across Canada.

Papers and Manuscripts of A. Hoffer series

This series consists mainly of published and unpublished research papers, articles and manuscripts written by Abram Hoffer. The records document the full range of Hoffer's research interests, including schizophrenia, megavitamin therapy, psychedelic therapy, and orthomolecular medicine and psychiatry. Both scholarly works and those intended for a lay audience are included.

Collection S-A207 includes Hoffer's correspondence with various journals regarding the publication of his research papers, as well as copies of Hoffer's papers that were being offered for publication. The collection also includes drafts and manuscripts for longer articles and books by Hoffer, many of which were published.

The series also includes bibliographies of Hoffer's published works and copies of his published work as Director of Psychiatric Research with the Saskatchewan Department of Public Health.

A small volume of Hoffer's publications are located in other series in the fonds as follows: Reprints, Papers, etc. (F 410-12); and Conferences, Meetings, Symposia (F 410-13). Hard copy and electronic drafts of the 2005 publication entitled Adventures in Psychiatry: The Scientific Memoirs of Abram Hoffer are located in F 410-1.28.

Subject Files series

This series consists of subject files created, accumulated and used by Abram Hoffer as a medical practitioner and researcher. The files consist mainly of articles, printed material and other information from various sources concerning a variety of subjects, including schizophrenia; abortion; electroconvulsive therapy; fluoridation; LSD and other hallucinogens; pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical companies; cancer, AIDS and other diseases; and psychedelic therapy.
