Pioneer Questionnaires collection

Collection consists of responses received by the Saskatchewan Archives following their distribution of a series of ten questionnaires to early settlers of the province, in particular those who lived in Western Canada prior to 1914. Each questionnaire focused on one of the following particular subjects: pioneer diet; general pioneer experience; schools; churches; recreation and social life; farming experiences; folklore; health; housing; and local government. The collection also includes responses to an eleventh questionnaire on Christmas that formed part of the material gathered by the Archives for a radio program and that was sent to selective respondents of the folklore questionnaire.

Questionnaire number 1 on nutrition was organized into sections on: flour and other grain products; sugars and syrups; dairy products; meat and fish; beverages; vegetables and dried fruits; canning and preserving; baking; water supply; soaps; fuels; methods of cooking and types of utensils; and wrappings and containers.

Questionnaire number 2 on pioneer experiences included questions on: places lived; income; family relations; travel; commerce; "firsts"; sources of place names; availability of historical source materials; and important changes since their arrival.

Questionnaire number 3 on schools was organized into sections on: personal experiences of early school activity; building and equipment; organization and administration; school attendance; classroom activities; school health conditions; school grounds, games and entertainment; district social life; general.

Questionnaire number 4 on churches included questions on: religious services attended; location of services; buildings used; music and choirs; organizations; youth services; activities and special events (e.g. picnics, suppers, fund raisers); administration and financial support; membership; records available; and special features.

Questionnaire number 5 on recreation and social life was organized into sections on: neighbourly visiting, parties, etc.; organizations and meetings; children's games; picnics and sports; reading; musical entertainment; hobbies and special interests; and general.

Questionnaire number 6 on farming experiences included questions on: dates, locations, and acquisition details of land; financing; machinery; crops, livestock and other commodities; co-operative societies; hazards and difficulties (e.g. pests, weather); harvesting and secondary production activities; exhibitions and fairs; gardening; and interactions with North West Mounted Police.

Questionnaire number 7 on folklore was organized into sections on: introductory information; settlement - the land (location, man-made features; associated stories and jokes), climate (tales/believe about weather phenomenon; associated animal behaviour), celestial bodies (associated stores/beliefs), supernatural beings (stories of ghosts/fairies/strange beings), human beings (anecdotes on individuals who performed unusual deeds), animals; supporting oneself after settlement (how were skills developed; household help); family or group gatherings in the pioneer community (storytelling, singing, jokes); life cycle in the pioneer community - childhood (naming; birthdays; songs, rhymes and stories; superstitions), marriage (accessories; good and bad luck), death (foreshadowing; ceremonies); good and bad luck (signs; attracting/avoiding); and proverbs and proverbial phrases.

Questionnaire number 8 on health was organized into sections on: services of a doctor (e.g. distance; competency; visitation; charges and payment); hospital services (e.g. distance; organization; visitiation; births); home remedies (e.g. associated illnesses and treatments; sources; treatment of serious accidents; aids for the handicapped); public health problems (e.g. vaccinations; epidemics); dental services (e.g. distance; visitation; treatments and services); and general (e.g. prevention; steps taken by the community for improvements).

Questionnaire number 9 on housing was organized into sections on: temporary structures (e.g. sod or log houses; even if the family lived in the building for many years); permanent structures (e.g. including the "better" house built after living for a time in quarters mentioned in temporary structures, a permanent home built upon arrival, or the "homestead shack" that may have been added to and continued as a permanent house); and general (e.g. winterizing; additions; animals/pets; furnishings; windows and ventilation; windbreaks; fire protection and emergency measures/features).

Questionnaire number 10 on local government was organized into sections on: statute labour districts and local improvement districts before 1908; township local improvement districts and rural municipalities after 1908; villages; and towns and cities.

Questionnaire on Christmas included suggested questions on: preparations; foods; guests; gifts; songs; correspondence; impact of weather; amusements; changes over time.

Claybank Brick Plant fonds

This fonds consists of records created, accumulated and used by the Claybank Brick Plant in Claybank, Saskatchewan from 1898 to 1991 (predominantly 1914 to 1989).

Included are records created, used, and accumulated by managers and staff of the Claybank brick plant when it was known as the Moose Jaw Fire Brick and Pottery Company, Dominion Fire Brick and Clay Products Ltd., Dominion Fire Brick and Clay Products (1954) Ltd., and A.P. Green Refractories (Canada) Ltd.

Records include: labour and employment records; union agreements; site management records; occupational health and safety records; production, shipping, and finance records; and research and development records including lab reports. A large number of photographs, architectural drawings, maps, plans and specifications are also included in the fonds.

This fonds is arranged into the following eight series: Labour and Employment Records; Site Management Records; Production and Shipping Records; Financial Records; Research and Development Records; Photographs, Architectural Drawings, Maps, Plans & Specifications; and Miscellaneous Records.

This fonds consists of records created, accumulated and used from 1986 to 1995 by Louise Simard in her political career as: Saskatchewan New Democratic Party (NDP) Opposition Health Critic and Women's Issues Critic; Minister of Health; Minister Responsible for the Women's Secretariat/Status of Women; member of the Saskatchewan NDP Caucus; and MLA for Regina Hillsdale and Regina Lakeview.

This fonds includes a small volume of records created by Patricia Atkinson in 1986 and 1987 as NDP Opposition Health Critic.

The Speeches series has been arranged into six sub-series: November 1, 1991 to December 31, 1992; 1993; 1994; January to February, 1995; Other MLA's; and Undated.

The MLA/Constituency series includes two sub-series: Regina Lakeview and Regina Hillsdale.

No sub-series have been assigned to the records in the Opposition Critic series and Political series.

The types of records included are correspondence, memoranda, reports, newspaper clippings, newsletters, briefs and submissions, news releases, budget material, briefing material, photographs, posters, moving images and a sound recording.

Political records were separated out and identified as a distinct series.

Lorne Scott fonds

The fonds consists of records created, accumulated and used by Lorne Scott from 1995 to 1998 as Minister of Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management. The fonds also contains records created in 1995 by Berny Wiens, Scott's predecessor in the portfolio.

The fonds consists of four series: Minister of Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management, 1995; Minister of Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management, 1996; Minister of Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management, 1997; Minister of Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management, 1998.

The records in each series were divided into three main categories where applicable: Department, Environment, and Resource Management. They were arranged alphabetically at the sub-series, sub-sub series and file levels.

The files typically include memoranda, correspondence, briefing notes, news releases, publications, petitions, speaking notes, newspaper clippings and legislation, including minister's orders, regulations and orders-in-council.

The Saskatchewan Archives did not receive any records Scott created in 1999 while Minister of Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management.

Scott, Lorne, 1947-

Axel C. Petersen fonds

This fonds consists mainly of colour slides of images taken between 1940 and 1986 by Saskatchewan resident Axel C. Petersen, whose lifelong hobby was photography. The majority of the images were taken in Saskatchewan although some images document Petersen's trips to Alberta; British Columbia; Seattle, Washington; Texas; and Mexico. The slides depict various subjects, including rural scenes, animals, buildings, agricultural activities, social events, museums, and ethnic displays.

The fonds also includes biographical information on Petersen; a typed, undated history of the Cando, Saskatchewan district; and an envelope addressed to Petersen in Denmark.

The slides are arranged in chronological order whenever possible. Slides that were originally in carousels are generally arranged in the order that they appeared in the carousels.

Herb Robbins fonds

Fonds consists of architectural drawings, primarily of schools and other public and government buildings with a smaller number of drawings of small office, commercial and other building types including private residences. The planned locations of the structures are almost exclusively within Saskatchewan.

They were created by Herb Robbins while in private practice first in the firm of McCudden and Robbins and later with the company of which he was sole owner, Herb Robbins Architect Ltd. A small number of drawings were not created by Robbins but served as source or reference material for renovations or demolition of existing buildings. Most of the pre-1955 drawings would fall into this category.

This fonds consists of records created, accumulated and used by executive members of the Saskatchewan History and Folklore Society Inc. The types of records included are constitution and bylaws, correspondence, annual reviews, reports, receipts, minutes of meetings, memoranda, oral history recordings, a 25th anniversary video tape and history, photographs, pamphlets, publications including Folklore, poetry, press releases, briefs, proposals, financial records, newsletters, membership lists and newspaper clippings.

Charles Neil and Margaret Cameron fonds

This fonds consists mainly of records created, accumulated and used by Charles Neil Cameron of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan relating to his post-secondary education and military service in the First World War.

Records relating to Charles Neil Cameron's post-secondary education include teaching certificates issued by the Saskatchewan Department of Education; a receipt for tuition from the University of Saskatchewan; photographs and documents from the University of Chicago. Records relating to Cameron's military service include a 1915 edition of The Sheaf containing a letter written by Cameron in France on August 15, 1915; a 1928 memorial edition of The Sheaf; a list of members of the First University Company, Canadian Expeditionary Force; a discharge certificate; ration coupons; two notebook diaries; three medical notebooks; postcards; photographs; and artefacts.

This fonds also includes several newspaper articles on Jacob George Burke and a photocopy of 'Early Times in the Gainsborough area', a history of the Shiel, Bradley and Cameron families written by Margaret Cameron in 1970 and 1971.
