The fonds consists of records created, accumulated and used by Lumby Productions Ltd. during its period of operation in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan from the early 1960s through to the mid- 1980s. Also included are certain records belonging to Lumby Productions' Regina office which operated between 1970 and 1974.

The records include correspondence dealing with the making, distribution, sales, and promotion of sound recordings and with the purchase of equipment and supplies; files pertaining to the production of radio and television commercials; films; brochures for various companies, organizations and government agencies; scripts; copy; photographs; posters; mock-ups; film edge numbers; storyboards; printed material; notes; artwork; animation drawings; animation cells; administrative office files dealing with copyright, export information, film library lists and financial matters; production order files including billing information, and copies of works including films, audio tapes and photographs.

Also included are personal files of John and Helen Lumby; as well as additional photographs, moving images and sound recordings not found in client or production files. These consist of finished films, production elements, out-takes, videotapes, negatives, photographic prints, slides, audio discs, tapes and reels.

Certain records in this fonds pre-date Lumby Productions Ltd. and relate to John Lumby's earlier work as a photographer with the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix.

The records in this fonds also consist of a small amount of records created by Size Small Productions Inc., formed in 1981 when the operations of Lumby Productions Ltd. were beginning to wind down. These records remained with the fonds during the initial arrangement of the records in 1988.

The fonds has been arranged into ten series over two periods of description in 1988 and 2003. These series are as follows: General Correspondence In; General Correspondence Out; Client/Project Files, Miscellaneous Files; Production Orders; Personal Files - John Lumby; Personal Files - Helen Lumby; Moving Images; Sound Recordings; Photographs.

General Correspondence In series

This series consists of general correspondence, chiefly from suppliers, retailers, musicians and members of the public concerning the making, distribution, sales and promotion of phonographic records. Also included are inquiries from amateur singers, musicians, songwriters and groups regarding Lumby Production's custom recording services and advice on how to become successful in the music business. The correspondence of 1962 and 1963 deals primarily with the sale of "Miss Helen's Kindergarten Party" records, while later files contain more correspondence concerning photographic and film work.

General Correspondence Out series

This series consists of carbon copies of outgoing general correspondence, chiefly concerning the recording business including equipment, supplies, distributions, sales, finances and advice to prospective artists. The 1962 and 1963 files deal primarily with the sale of "Miss Helen's Kindergarten Party" records, while later files contain more correspondence pertaining to photographic and film work.

Client/Project Files series

This series consists of files pertaining to the production of radio and television commercials, films, and brochures for various companies, organizations and government agencies.

Records include correspondence, scripts, copy, photographs, contracts, mockups, film edge numbers, storyboards, printed material, notes, artwork, production orders, project outlines, press releases, clippings, transcripts and other materials. A nearly-complete set of original artwork and coloured cels for an animated television commercial produced for the Saskatchewan Department of Agriculture is also found in this series.

Also included in the series are certain files created by Lumby Productions' Regina office.

This series complements the records contained in Series 5: Production Orders series.

Miscellaneous Files series

This series consists of administrative office files dealing with copyright, export information, film library lists, licensing, pricing information and financial matters. As well, the series contains material related to the Saskatoon Board of Trade for the period 1967-1970. Also included is material related to Helen Lumby's public relations and professional activities, including Miss Helen's Kindergarten Party and her membership in the Association of Canadian Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA).

The types of records consist of applications, correspondence, shipping orders, lists, financial statements, licenses, notes, photographs, minutes, bylaws, newsletters, reports, programmes and leaflets.

Certain records in this series complement records contained in Series 7: Personal Files - Helen Lumby series.

Production Orders series

This series consists of records related to the production of various media for clients of Lumby Productions Ltd. Each client had an order file created to track specific work undertaken by the company. The original files contained tracking forms, correspondence as well as examples of production work undertaken for clients, including photographs, negatives, sound recordings and moving images.

Sound recordings consist of choral song presentations, advertisement takes, music and sound clips, jingles, and oral presentations. There is also one recording of a funeral service.

Film reels consist of commercial rolls for various clients.

Photographs and negatives located in these records are described under Series 10: Photographs series.

The records complement those records contained in Series 3: Client/Project Files series.

Personal Files - John Lumby series

The records in this series relate to John Lumby's engineering studies at the University of Saskatchewan with the Royal Canadian Air Force (Reserve), University Flight Training Programme. Lumby graduated from the Officers' Indoctrination Course Reserve Training in June 1950. Also included are records related to other University of Saskatchewan courses and 1964 Convocation, as well as general business/financial records.

Personal Files - Helen Lumby series

The records in this series consist of the personal records of Helen Hase (Lumby) including general correspondence and fan mail related to the television show "Miss Helen's Kindergarten Party."

Also included are magazines and music journals collected by Hase prior to her marriage to John Lumby.

The records in this series complement certain records found in Series 4: Miscellaneous Files series.

Moving Images series

This series consists of documentaries, instructional films, aerial views, film footage reports, promotional spots, interviews, statements, television spots and commercials produced by Lumby Productions Ltd. for a variety of commercial, industrial, agricultural, educational and cultural clients, as well as government agencies. A primary client for many Lumby films was the Prince Albert Pulp Co. and its parent company, Parsons and Whittemore of New York. These films deal primarily with the forest industry in Saskatchewan. Other major clients included the Saskatchewan Department of Natural Resources, Saskatchewan Forest Products Corporation and the Saskatchewan Department of Education.

Included are negative masters; work prints, show/answer prints, release prints and cutting copy of films.

This moving image material within the fonds that was stored separately from other operational records. The records appear to have belonged to the Lumby Productions Ltd. film library.

Sound Recordings series

The records in this series consist of audio discs and audio tapes of recordings created by Lumby Productions Ltd. in relation to client services.

Included are choral, vocal and instrumental presentations; audio tracks for films, commercial and educational presentations, compilations of recording artists, narratives and interviews, instructional tracks, sound and musical clips, commercial takes, monologues, advertisements, news radio broadcasts, and live recordings of events.

Additional sound recordings related to specific projects are located in Series 5: Production Orders series.
