Matthew Doolin correspondence, biographical sketch, application for homestead patent

Records created by or pertaining to Matthew Doolin of Webb, Saskatchewan. Doolin served as a Private with the 102nd Battalion, Canadian Infantry during the Great War and was killed in action on April 9, 1917. Records include: letters written by Doolin from Camp Hughes, October 1, 1914 and on active service in France, February 9, 1917 to Chris Insland of Webb; a photocopy of Doolin's application for homestead patent, January 26, 1916; and a biographical sketch of Doolin that includes information on his estate.

Reminiscences entitled, Early Settlers Homesteading, written by Harold M. Buxton, a farmer in the Tisdale, Saskatchewan district who was born in 1903 and died in 1976. The reminiscences relate to the period 1903 to 1935.

John Herbert Hodgins autobiography

Autobiography of John Herbert Hodgins of Regina, Saskatchewan. Born in Massachusetts in 1894, Hodgins emigrated from the United States to Canada and established a homestead in the Hawkeye school district near Shellbrook in 1911. He served as a pilot for the Royal Flying Corps in the Great War and as a flying officer for the Royal Canadian Air Force in the Second World War. He was also involved in local government, and was employed as a land inspector. File also includes correspondence pertaining to information provided by Hodgins on the naming of Iroquois Lake near Shellbrook.

S.L. Cates reminiscences

Remiscences of S.L. Cates of White Bear, Saskatchewan about his youth on the family homestead in the Star Point district south of Qu'Appelle, filing for his own homestead in the Saskatchewan Landing area in 1908, farming and ranching in the area, and his service in the Great War. The reminiscences were recalled in an interview conducted by the Saskatchewan Archives Board on January 23, 1963. Also included in the file are additional reminiscences of Cates about his youth, sent in a letter to the Archives Board in March, 1963.

Diaries kept by R.H. Johnston

Two handwritten diaries kept by Private R.H. Johnston while serving with 21st Field Ambulance Corps and B Section Third Field Ambulance Corps, 1st Canadian Contingent. One diary indicates Johnston's address as YMCA, Regina, Saskatchewan. Johnston, a soldier, was born in 1890.

Unpublished manuscript entitled, They Left a Legacy, written by Lois Mary Thierman. Includes accounts of the homesteading experiences of her ancestors in the Webb district of Saskatchewan, and of her childhood in and around Webb. Includes references to dry farming.
