Ben and Adele Smillie August 10, 1989 Saskatoon 1/1AEB

An interview with Ben and Adele Smillie by Dennis Gruending for his book on Allan E. Blakeney called, PROMISES TO KEEP. Ben and Adele Smillie situate themselves in the NDP in the early 1960's. They begin by talking briefly about the medicare crisis and the role Woodrow Lloyd played in it. They then discuss the Waffle Manifesto and how Ben and Adele Smillie viewed it, the leadership campaign in 1970 and why they supported Don Mitchell instead of Allan Blakeney, the United Church's view on Uranium, the Smillies opinion of Blakeney and affirmative action in the government in the 1970's. Includes histories of the Gray and Riceton districts and Buck Lake settlement, place name origins, and family histories. Includes photographs relating to Gray, Saskatchewan dating from ca. 1918 to 1979 including aerial view taken by Carl Gillis, 1979; grain elevators and railway station, 1916; flood, 1916; sports day, ca. 1918; tearing down the old Grain Growers hall to build a community hall, 1945; and Ron Lewis with a curling trophy, ca. 1947. Some of the photographs were taken by Walter Greer, a storekeeper in Gray.

Hamilton, George Barr and Mrs. George Barr); electric power plants; and the activities and facilities of the YMCA, including its camps, swimming pool; Rae Street Methodist Church; Sixth Avenue United Church; St. John's United Church; Regina Boat Club regattas on Wascana Lake. Groome was employed as an engineer at the Regina Municipal Power Plant from 1929 to 1961.

Llewelyn Bethel United Church and cairn honouring Patagonia Welsh settlers

Item is an image showing Llewelyn Bethel United Church (built 1910) and a cairn that also honours the Welsh settlers from Patagonia and Wales who established the Llewelyn Colony in the Bangor area of Saskatchewan during the early 1900s. The plaque on the cairn indicates that the cairn was erected by members of the Church and the J. Evans Memorial Fund Committee in co-operation with the Department of Natural Resources in 1971.

Item is an image showing the plaque on a cairn erected beside the Llewelyn Bethel United Church in the Llewelyn colony of Welsh immigrants located near Bangor, Saskatchewan. The plaque claims that the church was built in 1910, and that the cairn was erected by members of the Church and the J. Evans Memorial Fund Committee in co-operation with the Department of Natural Resources in 1971. It also indicates that the cairn was placed in honour of the Welsh pioneers from Patagonia and Wales who settled in the area in the early 1900s. The plaque depicts the Saskatchewan coat of arms in the middle of the top edge with a tiger lily blossom on each side and shows a single wheat stalk on each side that run the length of the plaque.

This fonds consists of records created, accumulated and used by William A. Marjerrison of the Elrose, Saskatchewan district.
