Records of Jacob Miller relating to the First World War

Records created, accumulated and used by Jacob Miller M.S.M. of Neudorf, Saskatchewan (January 19, 1891 - October 10, 1963) relating to his service with the 45th Overseas Battalion of the Canadian Army from 1914 to 1919, during the First World War. Included are photocopies and digital scans of: correspondence; attestation papers; diary entries; photographs; a newspaper clipping; biographical sketches for local history books; and Miller's memoir entitled, "Beyond My Grasp". During his service in the Great War, Miller was posted to the First Canadian Mounted Rifles and took part in battles at Ypres, Somme, Cambrai, Monchy, Passchendale, Amiens, Hill 70, and Vimy Ridge. For his service, Miller was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. A small volume of the records also pertains to Miller's career, first as an employee of the Canadian Pacific Railway and then as postmaster for Neudorf, and to his marriage to Christina (Litzenberger) Miller.

Records created, accumulated and used by Heather Hodgson for a biographical essay she wrote on Neil J. "Piffles" Taylor, after whom Taylor Field in Regina, Saskatchewan is named, for the Cumberland Art Gallery exhibition entitled Heart of the Rider Nation: A Centennial Art Exhibition [1910-2010] Celebrating the Greatest Fans on Earth. Hodgson conducted research with members of the Taylor family; at the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and the Saskatchewan Archives; and with friends and associates of the Taylor family.

Records include a copy of the Cumberland Art Gallery exhibition catalogue; the Regina Collegiate Institute Souvenir for 1911/12; biographical information; e-mails; handwritten notes; photocopies of original letters written and received by Taylor during World War I; copies of articles from various newspapers and periodicals, including The Dales Athletic Club: Junior Football in Regina, 1928-1953, written by Ken Leyton-Brown and published in Prairie Forum, Spring 2007.

Records include photographs (colour ink jet prints) of houses at 2270 Rose Street and 924 College Avenue in Regina; rear view of St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church on Broder Street, Regina; Sam Taylor Jr., Dr. Weicker; the headstone for Neil J. Taylor and Mabel Taylor in Regina Cemetery; the Taylor cottage at Saskatchewan Beach; and images relating to Taylor's service in World War I.

Records of Dr. Urban J. Gareau

Records created, accumulated and used mainly by Dr. Urban J. Gareau of Regina, Saskatchewan. Gareau was born in 1893 in Ontario and served in World War I with the No. 3 General Hospital (McGill), Canadian Expeditionary Force, and as a probationer surgeon with the Royal Navy. After the war, he practiced in Sintaluta, Saskatchewan before establishing a pediatrics practice in Regina in 1925. The first pediatrician in Saskatchewan, Gareau retired in 1959 and died in Regina on September 16, 1963. He and his wife, Hazel Irene Urban, are buried in Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery in Regina.

Records consist of the following:

1): Original handwritten letters written by Urban Gareau to his father, mother and sisters in Ottawa, Ontario while he was
serving in World War I, 1915-1917.

2): Typewritten summary of Gareau's World War I letters dated March 17, 2007. Creator of document unknown.

3): Typewritten booklet entitled Reminiscences of a Lifetime of Medical Practice, by Urban J. Gareau, M.D. The booklet, dated March 4, 1963, consists of five articles written by Gareau originally published in 1962 and 1963 in The Leader-Post, Regina, Saskatchewan. The titles of the articles are as follows: World War I Experiences; Practice on the Prairies; Postgraduate Studies Abroad; Private Practice in Regina; and Medical Practices and Their Effect on Paediatrics.

4): Series of five photocopied articles written by Dr. Urban Gareau and published in 1962 and 1963 in The Leader-Post, Regina, Saskatchewan. Titles of articles are as follows: Regina doctor tells of early experiences in an eventful career; Young doctor settling in west faced many problems; Postgraduate studies prepare medical career; Miracle drugs changed pattern of medical practice; and Medicine makes recent rapid advances.

5): Copy of obituary for Dr. Gareau; editorial entitled Saskatchewan's first baby doctor; and Autumnal farewell by Lilian Fairley. 1963.

6): Copies of photographs of Charles Andrew Forsythe and Norman Ernest Forsyth; 28th North-West Battalion badge and 68th Overseas Battalion badge.

Robert Grierson Combe Victoria Cross related records

Records pertaining to the life and military career of Robert Grierson Combe of Melville, Saskatchewan who was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross medal on June 27, 1917 for his "most conspicuous bravery and example" before being killed in action, May 3, 1917. File includes: reproductions of military service records and award citation, newspaper clippings, a memonrandum pertaining to the naming of a lake in northern Saskatchewan in Combe's honour, along with a map and photographs showing the lake's location; a press release regarding the acquisition of Combe's Victoria Cross medal by the Saskatchewan Archives Board; and reproduced excerpts from the booklet entitled, For Valour: Saskatchewan Victoria Cross Recipients, produced by the Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation, showing Combe's medal and his biographical sketch.
