"A" Correspondence With Physicians series

This series consists mainly of correspondence between Dr. Abram Hoffer and other physicians around the world. The correspondence, both incoming and outgoing, is arranged alphabetically by correspondent's surname and is divided into three categories: A-1; A-2; and A-3. "A-1" correspondence is with physicians who have illness, like schizophrenia, within their own families. Most often these physicians are seeking Hoffer's treatment advice or assistance. "A-2" correspondence is with doctors practicing orthomolecular medicine or psychiatry who are typically requesting technical advice. "A-3" correspondence is with physicians who are requesting general information regarding orthomolecular medicine or psychiatry.

Included are original index cards with doctors' names and addresses arranged in alphabetical order and photographs mainly of Dr. Hoffer and other physicians that were forwarded to Hoffer along with the correspondence.

American Schizophrenia Association/Foundation series

This series consists of records created, accumulated and used by Abram Hoffer relating to his involvement with the American Schizophrenia Association/Foundation. The records consist mainly of general correspondence relating to the organization's formation, to Hoffer's participation on the Board of Directors from 1965 to 1970, and to the Association's reorganization into a division of the Huxley Institute for Biosocial Research in 1971. Also included is correspondence with local chapters across the United States and other administrative records, a sound recording and a moving image.

Appointment Diaries series

This series consists of Abram Hoffer's daily appointment diaries. The diaries contain information on Hoffer's daily activities, including appointments with patients, speaking engagements, travel plans, meetings, and conferences. The appointment diaries dating from June, 1972 to December, 1982 are located in collection S-A207. The appointment books dating from 1983 to 2004 are located in collection S-A1095.

Audio-Visual Materials series

This series consists mainly of sound recordings and moving images in various formats created, accumulated and used by Abram Hoffer. Some of the records relate to presentations given by Hoffer and various colleagues on medical topics.

A small volume of sound recordings and moving images are located in other series in the fonds (See F 410-1; F 410-6; F 410-8 and F 410-10).

Bibliographic Reference Cards series

This series consists of index cards containing bibliographic citations to articles in medical literature. Abram Hoffer collected the index cards for reference while he was preparing his scientific papers. Most cards contain only the bibliographic citation, although some also include a brief annotation as to the content of the item cited. The cards are arranged in alphabetical order by surname of author.

Clinical Files series

This series consists of clinical records created, accumulated and used by Abram Hoffer as a medical practitioner and researcher in Saskatchewan and British Columbia. The types of records included are mainly individual patient files arranged alphabetically by surname consisting of patient histories, correspondence, tests results, progress notes, and other confidential medical records. A broad range of psychiatric and physical disorders is represented in the clinical records although the emphasis is on orthomolecular treatment of schizophrenic and cancer patients.

The series also includes patient lists; case histories; notes; statistical data, mainly relating to cancer patients; correspondence with patients; records relating to a follow-up project in 1973 relating to children in the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan area who had been treated by Abram Hoffer; and cross reference cards arranged by the name of the disease/disorder and by patient surname.

Clippings and Publications series

This series consists of records accumulated and used by Abram Hoffer consisting mainly of newspaper clippings, publications, reports, theses and periodicals written by various authors on topics of interest to Hoffer. The topics include nutrition, depression and addiction.

Similar records are contained in the Reprints, Papers, etc. series (F 410-12).

Conferences, Meetings, Symposia series

This series consists of records created, accumulated and used by Abram Hoffer relating to conferences, meetings and symposia he attended, mainly in Canada and the United States of America, as a speaker or participant. The types of records included are correspondence, proceedings, notes, papers and a sound recording.

General Correspondence series

This series consists mainly of incoming and outgoing correspondence between Abram Hoffer and various individuals, organizations and companies with whom he was associated. This association included physicians, scientists, pharmaceutical companies, journal editors and administrators, publishers, medical associations, research institutes, foundations, government agencies, politicians, and colleagues around the world. The files, which reflect the full range of Hoffer's research and medical interests, are arranged alphabetically by personal or corporate name.

A small volume of correspondence was answered by Frances Fuller, CEO of Orthomolecular Vitamin Information Centre Inc.

Hoffer-Osmond Correspondence series

This series consists mainly of correspondence between Abram Hoffer and Dr. Humphry Osmond dating from 1951, when Osmond relocated to Saskatchewan from England and began to practice psychiatry, until Osmond's death in 2004. The correspondence relates mainly to psychiatric research topics undertaken by Hoffer and Osmond. The series also includes information on Osmond accumulated by Hoffer in 2005.

Correspondence dating from October 1951 to 1992 is located in collection S-A207 (Files XVIII.1 to XVIII.88). Correspondence dating from 1993 to 2004 and other records are located in collection S-A1095 (File 97).
