History

Sir Geoffrey Howe was born December 20, 1926 in Port Talbot, West Glamorgan, Wales and after being educated at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, Howe was called to the bar in 1952. First elected as a Member of the British Parliament in 1964, he served in government positions such as Solicitor-General from 1970 to 1972, Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1979 to 1982, Foreign Secretary [Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs] from 1983 to 1989, and deputy prime minister from 1989 to 1990. After retiring from the House of Commons in 1992, he published his memoirs (Conflict of Loyalties) in 1994. Howe died on October 9, 2015.

Howe was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1970 and was made a life peer (Baron Howe of Aberavon) in 1992.
