Visit of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales

  • R-A4
  • Item
  • 1901 or 1908-07-27

Accompanying document indicates image depicts His Royal Highness the Duke of Cornwall and York (later King George V) during his 1901 visit to Canada and suggests it may have been taken at Lebret, Saskatchewan while travelling through the Qu'Appelle Valley. Further, it identifies the other passengers in the vehicle as likely Lieutenant -Governor Amédée Forget and rector of Laval University Rev. Olivier Mathieu with Father Hougonard standing to the side of the road.

Alternatively, Library and Archives Canada describes the same image as representing His Royal Highness' visit to Canada in 1908 and further contradicts the record in the Saskatchewan Archives' holdings by indicating the image is taken in Saint-Joachim, Quebec and that Governor General Earl Grey and rector of Laval University Rev. Olivier Mathieu accompanied His Royal Highness.

The similarity of the geography of the locations, the poor quality of the face of the Lieutenant-Governor or Governor General, and the lack of additional documentation makes it difficult to ascertain which description is correct. However, the resemblance of the vehicle shown to those produced in 1908 (such as the McLaughlin) and the dissimilarity to those produced in 1901 or earlier hints at the likelihood of the later date of 1908.
