History

The position of Prime Minister of Ghana, as head of government, was established in March 1957 following Ghana's independence. The position was active from 1957 to 1960, but was abolished on July 1, 1960 when a new constitution was passed and established President as head of government. After a brief interlude under military rule, a parliamentary system of government was reestablished in 1969 and Prime Minister served as head of government until 1972 when the government was overthrown in a military coup. When civilian rule returned to Ghana in 1979, the position of Prime Minister was replaced by a President.
