Scope and content

This series consists of records pertaining to Tarasoff's family heritage and his personal and professional research interests in the Doukhobors in Western Canada. The series was initially divided into seven sub-series: Subject Files; Clippings; Publications, Publications on Microfilm and Bound Research Materials; Oral History Interviews; Sound Recordings; Photographs; and Artifacts.

The accruals described in 2005 include an additional six sub-series: Books and Booklets; Exhibits; Meetings, Conferences and Events; Newsletters, Publications, Clippings; Publications and Articles: Tarasoff as Author, Editor, Compiler; and Reports.

Records in the Doukhobor series overlap in content with most of the other series in the Tarasoff fonds.

The Doukhobor Subject File sub-series (II.A) forms a substantial portion of the series. It includes research materials, correspondence and oral history interview transcripts gathered during Tarasoff's research on Doukhobors -- in Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and throughout Canada -- for unpublished research reports such as In Search of Brotherhood: The History of the Doukhobors, published books and film projects.

This sub-series also includes working papers from Tarasoff's years as editor and publisher of the Doukhobor Inquirer / Inquirer; records of his involvement with Doukhobor youth organizations such as the Saskatoon Doukhobor Student Group; records of more recent Doukhobor interests including the Doukhobor centennials in 1995 (1885 Burning of Arms in Russia) and 1999 (1899 Doukhobor migration from Russia), and his visits to Russia; and records of his involvement in the peace movement.

The topics covered in this sub-series include: the history of Doukhobors in Canada, particularly in Saskatchewan and in the Kootenay area of British Columbia; Doukhobor leadership; various groups which have developed within Doukhobor society, including zealot factions; pacifism, a major tenet of Doukhoborism; and Doukhobor religion and culture

The types of records found in the sub-series include: bibliographies, indices and listings; reports, articles and publications; research notes; letters and correspondence; hymn books, poetry, short stories and scripts; speeches; transcripts; financial records and ledgers; conference proceedings and committee files; questionnaires and surveys; clippings; newsletters; programmes and invitations; diaries; and photographs.

The Clippings sub-series (II.B) contains loose clippings and scrapbooks gathered by Tarasoff pertaining to Doukhobors and other Russian-Canadians, from both English and Russian-language newspapers and magazines, for the period 1909-1994 (1948-1994 predominant). Additional clippings files on Doukhobors for the period 1999 to 2000 are listed in S-A 989.

The Publications, Publications on Microfilm and Bound Research Materials sub-series (II.C) contains various published and unpublished printed materials pertaining to Doukhobors, including books in English and Russian, copies of Iskra (Russian), and other bound research materials. It also includes several reels of microfilmed manuscripts about Doukhobors.

The types of records in the sub-series includes: histories and reminiscences; novels, poetry and plays; annual reports, publications, articles and reports; correspondence; police reports; programmes; hymns and songs.

The Oral History Interviews sub-series (II.D) contains oral history interviews with and about Doukhobors conducted by Tarasoff as part of his research in 1960-1961, 1963, 1965 and 1971-1981. Oral history interviews conducted in Russian have been identified. Interview notes and transcripts for several interviews are available in the Subject Files sub-series.

The Sound Recordings sub-series (II.E) includes: conference proceedings, festivals, celebrations, and demonstrations of Doukhobor and pacifist associations; Doukhobor musical performances, including festivals, choir recitals, and informal singing; CBC Radio International Programs series and other radio and TV spots concerning Doukhobors; tours of Doukhobor historical sights and a tour in Russia; Nikita Sergeevich Khruschev's visit to the United States in September 1959; and lectures and speeches delivered by Tarasoff on Doukhobor and pacifist subjects.

The Photographs sub-series (II.F) includes: aerial photographs of Doukhobor settlements in British Columbia; photographs celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Doukhobors in Saskatchewan, 1899-1949; glass negatives including images of prominent Russians who assisted with Doukhobor emigration; and various other photographs of Doukhobors in Saskatchewan and British Columbia.

The Artifacts sub-series (II.G) contains two banners made and carried by Reformed Doukhobors in Grand Forks, B.C., in 1962.

The Books and Booklets sub-series (2.1) contains published stories, historical expositions, anthologies, novels, ethnic studies and small amounts of correspondence.

The Exhibits sub-series (2.2) includes planning material, correspondence, selection lists, invitations, questionnaires, speeches and publicity related to the Doukhobor Exhibition at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull, Quebec held between January 1996 and September 1998.

The Meetings, Conferences and Events sub-series (2.3) includes records related to academic meetings and conferences; the International Doukhobor Intergroup Symposium; literary events and round tables; Burning of Firearms Centennial events (1995 and 1999); and the Voices for Peace Tour. The types of records include addresses and speeches; promotional material; planning documents; correspondence, programmes, evaluations; press releases; budget material; proceedings; committee meeting notes; and reviews.

The Newsletters, Publications, Clippings sub-series (2.4) complement earlier series and include correspondence, clippings and issues of The Dove and Iskra.

The Publications and Articles: Tarasoff as Author, Editor, Compiler sub-series (2.5) includes drafts, translation notes, proofs, final and print copy formats, research material, editorial versions, notes, correspondence with contributors, reviews, material for publishers and biographies for the following projects: Doukhobor Incantations Through the Centuries; History of the Doukhobors in V.D. Bonch-Bruevich's Archives (1896-1950s); From Russia with Love: The Doukhobors (1995); Spirit Wrestlers: Centennial Papers in Honour of Canada's Doukhobor Heritage (1995); Spirit Wrestlers' Voices Honouring Doukhobors on the Centenary of their Migration to Canada in 1899 (1998); Spirit Wrestlers: Doukhobor Pioneers' Strategies for Living; and Plakun Trava: The Doukhobors (1982, 2000).

Arrangement

For S-A 690, Series II A. through G: The factors determining arrangement of the records in this part of the series have not been documented during the description process. Arrangement of most sub-series reflects alphabetical order. Clippings Files sub-series has been arranged chronologically. See fonds notes.

For F 370, Series 2 (accruals): Arrangement reflects both original order and archival intervention. The content of the records in this accrual suggested additions to Series II in S-A 690 Doukhobor series. Box listings of the records were prepared by Koozma Tarasoff for the bulk of the series. These provided the titles for most of the records as well as the basis for series and sub-series definition.
