Biographical history
Denis (Denny) Monte Carr was born on June 16, 1939 in Vancouver, British Columbia. He received his primary education at Lord Robertson School in Vancouver and attended high school in Quesnel and Richmond, B.C. Carr also attended the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon for two years.
Carr's career in radio broadcasting began when he was employed part-time at CKCQ in Quesnel while attending high school. In 1959, he was employed full-time at CKWL in Williams Lake, B.C. and remained there until taking a job at CKSA in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan in 1961. On August 31, 1961, Carr joined CFQC in Saskatoon and shortly thereafter joined up with radio personality Wally Stambuck to form the team of Wal 'n Den. Carr and Stambuck spent many years together on the air, playing practical jokes, interviewing celebrities and involving themselves in Saskatoon community events. In 1978, the Wal 'n Den show won the Billboard Magazine Award of Broadcast Excellence by International Radio Programming Forum; Carr travelled to New York City to receive the award. After Stambuck left CFQC, Carr continued to work for the station as a radio host and in a management position until 1991, when he joined CJWW in Saskatoon. Carr remained at CJWW until his death on July 22, 1999.
Active in numerous provincial and local organizations, Carr developed the Salvation Army Secret Santa Campaign; was a director for the Elmwood Residences and was vice-chair for the Royal University Hospital Foundation. He was also a major supporter of the Saskatchewan Heart Foundation, Ronald McDonald House and the Canadian Cancer Society. Carr received numerous awards and honours in recognition of his outstanding community involvement including the Rotary Club "Golden Wheel Award" for Arts and Education (1991); the Saskatoon Press Club "Community Commitment of Merit" Award (1993); Saskatoon Citizen of the Year (1999); the Legend and Legacy Award from the Saskatchewan Country Music Association; the YMCA Volunteer of the Year; and the Order of Canada.
Carr married Verna Antifave in 1967. They had two children: Christie and Trevor.
Custodial history
Verna Carr, wife of Denny Carr, donated these records to the Saskatoon office, Saskatchewan Archives in two accessions in 2000 and 2003: S2000-34 (April 12, 2000) and S2003-8 (February 4, 2003).
Scope and content
This fonds consists mainly of records created, accumulated, and used by Denny Carr during his professional career as a radio broadcaster in Saskatchewan. The majority of the records relate to Carr's activities during his employment with CFQC Radio in Saskatoon.
The types of records included are: correspondence; anecdotes; interview notes; photocopied articles; a postcard; CFQC programming information and handbooks; CFQC history booklets; posters; newspaper clippings; maps; a copy of "Tribute to Roy Currie" [another broadcaster at CFQC]; "Gordie Howe Day" programme; programme schedules; photographs of CFQC radio station and anniversary events; various sound recordings including a vinyl album of "Saskatoon, We're Proud to Call You Home" and many clips of programmes and interviews conducted by Denny Carr and his on-air partner, Wally Stambuck. Also included is a scrapbook relating to Carr's broadcasting career from 1957 to 1999 compiled by his wife, Verna Carr.
