Clarence Bertram Fairbairn was born on April 13, 1921 at Shoal Lake, Manitoba to Margaret and Harold Fairbairn. He was raised in Neudorf, Saskatchewan. In 1941, he enlisted with the Canadian Army in the Royal Canadian Engineers and served at training bases in British Columbia and Saskatchewan. He attained the rank of sergeant-major (Warrent Officer Class 2).
Fairbairn earned his Bachelor of Journalism degree from Carleton University in 1949. He was employed by the Winnipeg Tribune for the next seventeen years. During this period, Fairbairn was an active member of the Winnipeg Press Club and served as president of the Charleswood Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. He became business editor at the Tribune before moving to Saskatoon to join the Western Producer in 1966. He started as a reporter and later moved into management. Fairbairn was managing editor of the Producer when he took early retirement in 1983. While working for the Producer, Fairbairn was active in the Canadian Farm Writers' Federation and the Saskatchewan Farm Writers' Association. He was also executive director of the Saskatchewan Journalists' Association and active in Saskatoon organizations such as Pion-Era.
Fairbairn died in Saskatoon on September 29, 1989.
In 1942, Fairbairn married Eva Hurlbert of Star City, Saskatchewan. Together they had three sons: Garry, Clare, and Brett.

Brett Fairbairn, son of Clarence Fairbairn, donated some of these records to the Regina office, Saskatchewan Archives in one accession in 2010: 2010-059 (March 9, 2010).
Eva Fairbairn, wife of Clarence Fairbairn, donated some of these records to the Saskatoon office, Saskatchewan Archives in one accession in 2000: S2000-8 (June 21, 2000).
Portée et contenu
This fonds consists mainly of records created, accumulated and used by Clarence B. Fairbairn during his professional career as a reporter, editor and managing editor of the "Western Producer" newspaper in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
The types of records included are newspaper clippings and editorials, notes about the newspaper, and many photographs, negatives, and slides, including negative albums and high quality 2 x 2 inch colour slides. The graphic materials depict various aspects of life in Saskatchewan and Western Canada primarily in the 1960s and 1970s. There is also a file containing copies of published obituaries for Clarence Fairbairn, likely collected by his son, Brett Fairbairn.
The fonds has been arranged into two series: Newspaper and Personal; and Photographs.
