Biographical history

Charles Neil Cameron was born on July 20, 1893 in Greenoch, Renfrewshire, Scotland to Murdo and Ellen (Collins) Cameron. He came to Canada with his family in March, 1903 and was raised in and near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Cameron earned a Bachelor of Arts degree (1913) and a Master of Arts degree (1915) from the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. On March 16, 1915, Cameron enlisted in the 38th Canadian Infantry Battalion in Saskatoon and was drafted into the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. He transferred to the Canadian Army Medical Corps on August 22, 1916. Cameron was initially stationed in England and served thirty-six months in France. He was discharged from military service on December 2, 1918.

After the war, Cameron returned to the University of Saskatchewan to study and teach. He then attended the University of Chicago, Illinois, earning a Ph.D. from the Ogden Graduate School of Science. In 1923, Cameron joined the faculty of the University of Saskatchewan as a professor of chemistry and taught until his death on November 28, 1929. He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.

Charles Neil Cameron married Margaret Shiel of Gainsborough, Saskatchewan on June 8, 1923. The Camerons had two daughters: Margaret Patricia (Peggy) and Florence Jean.

Biographical history

Margaret Cameron was born on September 8, 1897 to William and Elizabeth Florence (Bradley) Shiel. She was raised in the Gainsborough, Saskatchewan district and earned a Bachelor of Arts (1921) and a Master degree (1923) from the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. Cameron worked as an instructor in chemistry at the University of Saskatchewan and as a medical technician for the Saskatchewan Anti-Tuberculosis League in Saskatoon until her retirement in 1957. In 1965, Cameron moved to Victoria, British Colombia. Around 1972, she moved to Nanaimo and resided there until her death on September 16, 1994. Margaret Cameron is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.

Margaret Shiel married Charles Neil Cameron of Saskatoon on June 8, 1923. The Camerons had two children: Margaret Patricia (Peggy) and Florence Jean.

Custodial history

Margaret Cameron, wife of Charles Neil Cameron, donated these records to the Regina office, Saskatchewan Archives in one accession in 1978: R78-393 (August 29, 1978).

Scope and content

This fonds consists mainly of records created, accumulated and used by Charles Neil Cameron of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan relating to his post-secondary education and military service in the First World War.

Records relating to Charles Neil Cameron's post-secondary education include teaching certificates issued by the Saskatchewan Department of Education; a receipt for tuition from the University of Saskatchewan; photographs and documents from the University of Chicago. Records relating to Cameron's military service include a 1915 edition of The Sheaf containing a letter written by Cameron in France on August 15, 1915; a 1928 memorial edition of The Sheaf; a list of members of the First University Company, Canadian Expeditionary Force; a discharge certificate; ration coupons; two notebook diaries; three medical notebooks; postcards; photographs; and artefacts.

This fonds also includes several newspaper articles on Jacob George Burke and a photocopy of 'Early Times in the Gainsborough area', a history of the Shiel, Bradley and Cameron families written by Margaret Cameron in 1970 and 1971.

Some of the textual records are in fragile condition. Some of the photographs are blurry and double-exposed. The majority of photographs are glued into an album.
