Histórico

Born August 27, 1928, Mangosuthu Buthelezi is the son of Mathole Buthelezi and Magogo kaDinuzulu. While studying at the University of Fort Hare, he became active in the youth wing of the African National Congress and his activism led to his expulsion from the University in 1950, but he would later complete his degree at the University of Natal. In 1953, he became chieftain (Inkosi / Nkosi) of the Buthelezi people and he also began serving as the assistant to Zulu king Cyprian. He was elected Chief Executive Officer of the Zulu Territorial Authority in 1970, and then in 1972 was appointed the Chief Executive Councillor (later known as Chief Minister) of the KwaZulu Government and continued to occupy this position until it was abolished in 1994. During the mid-1970s he would help to establish and serve as president of the Inkatha National Cultural Liberation Movement (INCLM) [known as Inkatha Freedom Party beginning in 1994] as a paramilitary organization dedicated to the formation of a non-racist democratic political system. Considered a political moderate, Buthelezi's activities during the period of Apartheid branded him a collaborator in the eyes of some black South Africans, however he often resisted the South African government authority and attempted to push for greater political and economic freedom for black South Africans. After the 1994 South African national election, in which he became a member of the South African National Assembly, President Nelson Mandela made Buthelezi Minister of Home Affairs and held this position until 2004.

He married Irene Audrey Thandekile Mzila on July 2, 1952 and they had three sons and five daughters.
