West, Michael Edward "Mick", 1946-

Michael Edward "Mick" West was born on May 26, 1946 in Regina, Saskatchewan to Horace Gordon "Westy" and Roma Francis (Cram) West. He received his early education in Regina and Saskatoon and graduated from Sheldon-Williams Collegiate, Regina, in 1964. From 1964 to 1968, West studied photography at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, Toronto. As a student at Ryerson, he received 2nd place in the Expo '67 Canada Photo Contest and had several of his photographs exhibited at the Canadian Kodak Pavilion at Expo '67.

Upon completion of his education, West was employed with West's Studio, the photographic studio owned and operated by his father. He assumed operation of the business upon his father's retirement in 1981, and continued its operation until its closure in 1986. Subsequently, he was a partner in Western Photographics Ltd., and later was employed by TSI Reprographics, Dominion Bridge, Canron Construction, and House of Tools. As a professional photographer, West was the recipient of numerous Merit Awards for his works from the Saskatchewan Professional Photographers Association and the Professional Photographers of Canada.

Through the years, West has been a member of the Professional Photographers of America, a member and president of the Saskatchewan Professional Photographers Association, and a member and vice-president of the Professional Photographers of Canada. He has also been active with the Navy League of Canada, DeMolay Canada and the Buffalo City Kinsmen Club.

West continues (2013) to reside in Regina.

West, Wilfred Lawson, 1896-1970

Wilfred Lawson West was born in Bourneville, England in 1896 to Samuel and Emma West. He was employed as a young apprentice photographer before immigrating to Canada. He arrived in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1907 and was employed as a cattle herder before apprenticing with the Johnson Brothers photographic studio in 1912. West joined the Canadian Army in 1914 and worked on various war bond campaigns. He was given a medical discharge in 1918.

Upon his return to Regina, West was employed briefly as a boys' work secretary with the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) before he purchased the Johnson Art Studio in 1918 and renamed the business in his name. His photographic works included portraits of prominent politicians to local families, as well as scenes capturing commercial, social, and cultural life in Regina. Aside from operating his business, West was involved in the community as a member of the King Hiram Lodge, the Wascana Kiwanis Club, and the Regina Little Theatre Society. He retired in 1955 and sold his business to his brother, Horace. After his retirement, West retired to Clarkson, Ontario. He died there on June 16, 1970.

William (Bill) E. West was born February 28, 1915 on a farm one half mile south of Langbank, Saskatchewan. His parents were Albert (Bert) Ernest West and Jeanne Emélié West (neé Dailley). West was the oldest of seven children. West received his primary and secondary education at the Belleville School in Belleville, Saskatchewan. He also earned certification as a mechanic in the Royal Canadian Air Force between 1942 and 1945 and certification to work as a gas fitter in 1968.

West worked on the family farm and in 1941 he began working at the Langbank Co-op. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (R.C.A.F.) in 1942. Between 1942 and 1945, West was on active duty with the R.C.A.F. and was stationed in Winnipeg for much of the war. In 1945 West was sent overseas and served in England, Scotland and Wales. After West's military service in 1945, West and his wife moved back to Langbank where he resumed work at the local Co-op. In 1950, West opened West's Garage, where he continued to work until his retirement in 1977. His son Gordon ran the business until 1995.

Throughout his life, West was involved in several community organizations, including the International Order of the Odd Fellows; the Royal Canadian Legion, Kennedy Chapter #102, where he also served as president; the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, Wawota Branch; and the Kennedy Gun Club.

West was the recipient of several awards, including the Voluntary Service Award, Legion Meritorious Service Award (2004), a Merit Award, and Past President's Medal, all from the Royal Canadian Legion; a plaque for the Langbank citizens recognizing 45 years of community service (1996); and an Award of Merit from the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (1992).

Bill West died on May 30, 2004 at the Kipling Memorial Health Centre in Kipling, Saskatchewan.

Bill West married Margaret Irene Barr on February 22, 1945 in Winnipeg. Manitoba. They had three children: Marilyn (1947); Albert (1950), and Gordon (1955).
