Sherwin Holger Petersen was born on May 12, 1953 at Rose Valley, Saskatchewan to Orla and Noreen Petersen. He attended Kelsey Institute in Saskatoon.

Prior to his entry into provincial politics, Petersen farmed in the Rose Valley district.

Petersen was first elected to the Saskatchewan Legislature in 1982 and served as a Progressive Conservative MLA for the Kelvington-Wadena constituency until 1991. He served in the Grant Devine Government as Minister of Highways and Transportation and Minister Responsible for the Highway Traffic Board (1989-1991).

After losing his seat in the 1991 provincial general election to Kenneth Kluz (NDP), Petersen returned to farming and operated an air seeder business. He ran unsuccessfully in the Mackenzie riding in the 1993 federal election.

Peterson currently (2006) operates and instructs safety courses at Eastside Safety and Consulting in Rose Valley.

Petersen married Sharon Ann Wheeler on July 14, 1973. They have two children: Shaunna and Sheridan.
