William (Bill) E. West was born February 28, 1915 on a farm one half mile south of Langbank, Saskatchewan. His parents were Albert (Bert) Ernest West and Jeanne Emélié West (neé Dailley). West was the oldest of seven children. West received his primary and secondary education at the Belleville School in Belleville, Saskatchewan. He also earned certification as a mechanic in the Royal Canadian Air Force between 1942 and 1945 and certification to work as a gas fitter in 1968.

West worked on the family farm and in 1941 he began working at the Langbank Co-op. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (R.C.A.F.) in 1942. Between 1942 and 1945, West was on active duty with the R.C.A.F. and was stationed in Winnipeg for much of the war. In 1945 West was sent overseas and served in England, Scotland and Wales. After West's military service in 1945, West and his wife moved back to Langbank where he resumed work at the local Co-op. In 1950, West opened West's Garage, where he continued to work until his retirement in 1977. His son Gordon ran the business until 1995.

Throughout his life, West was involved in several community organizations, including the International Order of the Odd Fellows; the Royal Canadian Legion, Kennedy Chapter #102, where he also served as president; the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, Wawota Branch; and the Kennedy Gun Club.

West was the recipient of several awards, including the Voluntary Service Award, Legion Meritorious Service Award (2004), a Merit Award, and Past President's Medal, all from the Royal Canadian Legion; a plaque for the Langbank citizens recognizing 45 years of community service (1996); and an Award of Merit from the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (1992).

Bill West died on May 30, 2004 at the Kipling Memorial Health Centre in Kipling, Saskatchewan.

Bill West married Margaret Irene Barr on February 22, 1945 in Winnipeg. Manitoba. They had three children: Marilyn (1947); Albert (1950), and Gordon (1955).
