The Regina League of Women Voters (R.L.W.V.) was a non-sectarian and non-partisan organization formed in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1938. On May 30, 1938, women from various local organizations gathered to discuss the viability of setting up a league of women whose focus would be to encourage the responsible participation of women in politics by exercising the franchise. The group also decided to actively search out and support suitable female candidates in their attempts to become involved in the political process. Any women interested in the League's mandate was eligible for membership.
The first regular meeting of the R.L.W.V. was held on October 27, 1938. A constitution was drafted and a name for the organization was chosen. The first officers elected were Mrs. Henry L. Gale (President); Mrs. F.B. Reilly (Vice-President); Mrs. A.T. Campbell (Treasurer); and Marg Duff (Secretary). Officers served a one year term. The following Standing Committees were established: Membership; Finance; Programme; Publicity and Survey. The officers and conveners of the Standing Committees formed the Executive Committee. In 1940, the officers were expanded to include president; first vice-president; second vice-president; recording secretary; corresponding secretary and treasurer. General meetings were held once per month and the annual meeting was held every January.
The League held annual teas and general meetings at which speakers, including politicans at the municipal, provincial and federal level, spoke on various topics, such as civic election issues; the provincial budget; and natural resources. Most of the meetings were held at the Council Chamber in Regina's City Hall.
By the 1950s, the R.L.W.V. saw decreasing interest and low attendance at functions. At the November 26, 1956 League meeting, the members decided that the function of the League had been fulfilled and that they would disband. Motions were passed to donate all existing monies to the World Council of Churches Hungarian Relief Fund and to entrust the records to the Saskatchewan Archives Board. The League disbanded following the annual meeting on January 28, 1957.
