Knights of Columbus of Saskatchewan, Regina Council No. 1247, 1907-

The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic men's fraternal service organization that provides charitable service and financial aid to its communities, parishes, families and members. The Regina Council No. 1247 was formed on June 17, 1907 and was the first Saskatchewan Council. Judge Reginald Rimmer was the Charter Grand Knight, and the first meeting of its 64 charter members took place in the Parish at Gratton Catholic School.

The Saskatchewan Rose Society was organized in February 1998 to encourage growing and enjoying roses in Saskatchewan The Society was dissolved in February 2012.

Lamey, Barney, 1897-1977

Barney Lamey was born on July 29,1897, near Guelph, Ontario. He received his education in London, Ontario and came to Saskatchewan in 1915 and filed for a homestead in the Aylsham District. In 1916 he enlisted for service in the Canadian Army during WWI, served overseas, worked as instructor at base in Witley, and was discharged in Regina in 1919.

After spending time in northwestern United States and California ,he returned to Saskatchewan to farm in Strongfield district in 1922.

In 1922-1923 Barney Lamey became Secretary and Treasurer of the Strongfield area United Grain Growers, helped organize the Wheat Pool and was secretary of the Strongfield branch. He was also a director of the original Co-operative Association and organized the Aylsham Branch in 1937, and was its first president. He also was chairman of the Aylsham Wheat Pool for several years.

In 1944 he opened a real estate and insurance office in Aylsham, and in 1948 moved the business to Carrot River.

Barney was very active in community affairs, twice president of the Carrot River parent-teacher Association, served as a municipal councilor, was member of the hospital board, secretary of the hockey club, secretary-treasurer of the Rotary Club, incorporated the Carrot River Credit Union and was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Barney Lamey died on September 29, 1977.
