The Gallery opened as an experimental satellite of the Norman Mackenzie Gallery in 1974 under the name Rosemont Art Gallery. The purpose of the project was to reach out to new audiences and respond to community demands for more local and regional programming. In 1976 an independent organization formed and incorporated as a non-profit society to take over the gallery. In 1984, the Gallery entered into a partnership arrangement with the City of Regina to take over the gallery space in the Neil Balkwill Civic Arts Centre.

In 2005, after 30 years in operation, the name was changed to the Art Gallery of Regina to better reflect the scope of the organization and its role in the community.

  • 1996-2007

ArtSchool Saskatchewan was incorporated in November 1996 as a revamped arts training system for students in Saskatchewan. The need for an in-province arts training system arose following the demise of the Saskatchewan School of the Arts, that ran from 1969 to 1989. The school offered summer music and arts camp programming for youth in Bruno, Saskatchewan. Classes included painting and drawing, ceramics, sculpture, musical theatre, drama, and classical singing. The school relied on individual and corporate donations and government grants for its ongoing operations. ArtSchool Saskatchewan ceased operations in July 2007.
