On January 1, 2006, six public school divisions (Kindersley, Rosetown, Eston-Elrose, Outlook, Davidson and Biggar) were combined to form Sun West School Division No. 207 as part of the Government of Saskatchewan’s restructuring of rural school divisions. The Division covers an area in west-central Saskatchewan of approximately 31,252 square kilometres and includes schools in the communities of Kenaston, Marengo, Coleville, Kindersley, Eatonia, Eston, Elrose, Kyle, Lucky Lake, Beechy, Loreburn, Kinsmore, Outlook, Harris, D’Arcy, Plenty, Davidson, Rosetown, and Biggar. The division is currently (2021) one of 27 school divisions in the province and administers 42 schools, including Kindergarten to Grade 12 schools, elementary schools, a middle school, high schools and Hutterite colony schools. The division’s total student population as of the 2018-19 school year was 5219, with 713 full-time staff.

Sun West School Division is governed by an elected Board of Education consisting of a Chair and nine trustees who are not employees of the school division. The Board members serve four year terms. The Board’s duties and powers include administering and managing the educational affairs of the school division; exercising general supervision and control over the schools in the division; providing and maintaining school accommodations, equipment and facilities; and appointing and employing qualified teachers, principals and other staff. The Director of Education is chosen by and is responsible to the Board of Education and is supported by other senior administrators, including Superintendents of Education. The division receives funding primarily from property taxes; grants from the federal and provincial governments; tuition and related fees; and income interest. The division office is located in Rosetown.

King Edward School in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan was originally housed in a downtown building that was constructed in 1904. This building was demolished in 1956, but the school continued operations in another building until 1980 when it was closed following a fire in January 1979.

A petition for the organization of a school district in the Shell Lake/Amiens, Saskatchewan district dated January 30, 1929 was submitted to the Saskatchewan Department of Education by a committee consisting of David Schock, Henry Schmidt and John Fell. A meeting was held on March 1, 1929 to elect trustees and on March 26, 1929 the Cresco School District No. 4789 was officially established. The first elected trustees were Carl Hegraves, Stuart Anderson and Henry Schmidt. Mrs. Carl Hegraves was the first secretary-treasurer. The first teacher was Mary L. Sanderson. Around 1945, the school district became part of the Shell Lake School Unit No. 63. The school district ceased operations around 1963.

In 1965, The School Act was passed by the Saskatchewan Government, allowing for the amalgamation of school boards. On January 1, 1966, the Board of the Regina Public School District No. 4 of Saskatchewan and the Board of the Regina Collegiate Institute School District No. 1 (High School) amalgamated to form the Board of Education for the Regina Public School District No. 4 of Saskatchewan and the Regina Collegiate Institute. The first meeting of the new Board was held on January 3, 1966. The first Board consisted of A.S. Cochrane (chairman); Dr. J.J.A. McLurg (vice-chairman) and seven members (A.S. Cochrane; Dr. J.J.A. McLurg; B.G. Brown; Ruth Mathison Buck; G.A. Dawley; J.A. Griffin and H. Ingham).

The Board was responsible for administering the public elementary and high schools in the City of Regina. In 1966, the Board was responsible for Balfour Technical School; 45 public elementary schools and 6 collegiates. The Board was elected through a public vote held every three years. Funding was secured through provincial grants and locally generated revenues. The Board's duties and powers included administering and managing the educational affairs of the school district; exercising general supervision and control over the schools in the district; approving administrative procedures pertaining to the internal organization, management and supervision of the schools; providing and maintaining school accomodation, equipment and facilities; and appointing and employing qualified teachers, principals and other necessary staff.

The administration office was located at 1860 Lorne Street. Senior administrative staff included the Director and Superintendent, who served as the chief executive officer; the Deputy Director and Deputy Superintendent; the Planning and Research Officer; the Secretary-Treasurer; the Chief Clerk and the Business Manager. Superintendents; assistant superintendents; consultants; principals, teachers and clerical and maintenance staff were also part of the administrative organization.

In 1978, all school districts became school divisions pursuant to the Education Act (S.S. 1978, c.17). The Regina Public School District No. 4 of Saskatchewan was disestablished and ceased to exist on January 1, 1979 while the Regina Collegiate Institute School District No. 1 (High School) was disestablished effective March 30, 1979. The Regina School Division No. 4 of Saskatchewan was established effective January 1, 1979 to continue administering and operating the public elementary and high schools in Regina.

Incorporated as a town on January 1, 1977.

Incorporated as a rural municipality on December 13, 1909.

Incorporated as a city in 2012.

Incorporated as a village in 1906, but following population decline it reverted to hamlet status in 1927.

Reverted to a hamlet in 1927, but subsequently re-incorporated as a village in 1962.
