William John James Family, 1870-

William John (W.J.) James was born on December 23, 1870 to William, Sr. and Maria James of the Fordwich area, Howick Township, Huron County, Ontario. His father was a blacksmith and carriage maker in Ontario, and first travelled west with the Wolseley Red River Expedition in 1870.

W. J. James came to Prince Albert, Northwest Territories ca.1890. His family followed around 1893. Both James and his father were employed by the James Sanderson sawmill as labourers. W.J. James became a barber while also establishing a photography business briefly with W.J. Jackson in 1894. James continued in barbering while also working as an itinerant photographer in the 1890s. He hired Theodore Charmbury as a photographer in his studio between 1901 and 1903, and operated a branch studio at Indian Head in 1904-1906. James operated the City Art Studio (1909-1919) and W.J. James & Co. (est.1927) in Prince Alberta until his retirement in the mid-1930s. James' professional career as an itinerant, commercial and portrait photographer spanned over forty years during which he travelled extensively in the Prince Albert district and northern parkland regions of Saskatchewan documenting settlement, local industry and everyday life.

W.J. James married Maude Rebecca Courtney, daughter of local rancher, Thomas W. and Matilda Courtney, on April 27, 1904 in Prince Albert. Maude Courtney was born in Bobcaygeon, Ontario on December 31, 1882 and came to the Prince Albert area with her family as a child.

W. J. and Maude James had four daughters: Mossie (b. 1904; died at 8 months); 'Eva' Eunice (b. 1906, married (1) Charles Musk; (2) William Bramwell McKenzie); Norma (b. 1908, married Nelson Thurson) and Murl (b. 1914, married W.B. Smith). Both Maude James and daughter Norma worked at the family studio, becoming proprietors of W.J. James & Co. following James' death in 1944. Norma James is listed in commercial directories as a photographer in the mid-1940s. W. J. James & Co. ceased operation in 1957.

William John James died on September 9, 1944 in Prince Albert. Maude James died in December 1956. Both are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Prince Albert.

Shirley Collins, daughter of Eunice McKenzie and granddaughter of W.J. James currently (2007) resides in Saskatoon.

William Hipperson Family, 1884-

Alfred William Smith Hipperson was born in England on September 7, 1884 to Alfred K. Hipperson and Mary Elizabeth Smith. He had four sisters: Lois; Lily; Irene and Anna. William emigrated from Norwich, England to the Peterborough, Ontario district around 1901 and moved to Regina, Saskatchewan in 1906. Around the same time, William began to drop the Alfred and Smith from his name and signed legal and business documents as simply William Hipperson.

Hipperson married Wilhelmina Gumpricht on December 15, 1911 in Peterborough, Ontario. Wilhelmina passed away on May 19, 1920. William and his second wife, Margaret, raised three children: William Lloyd (born around 1916), Evelyn Margaret Wilhelmina (born August 4, 1925), and Donald Kemp Hipperson (born August 8, 1928). Donald Kemp Hipperson and his wife Nancy had four children: Karen Jane (born ca. 1953), Donald Ramsay (born June 2, 1955), Douglas John (born November 11, 1957), and Gordon Kemp (born April 6, 1960).

William worked as a carpenter and a general contractor in Peterborough and in Saskatchewan, and by 1927 had established Hipperson Construction Ltd. in Regina. William also entered into several related business enterprises, including Regina Sash and Door Limited; Hy-Grade Millwork Limited; Qu'Appelle Apartments Ltd.; Somerset Properties Ltd.; and Southfields Investments Ltd.. The family also owned three farming operations in the Cymric, Duval and Cupar areas of Saskatchewan that included grain farming, livestock (Southfields Hereford Farm), and fur farming (Hygrade Silverfox Company).

The family's participation in these businesses ranged from acting as the principle shareholders to actively managing and administering their operations as directors and executive office holders. The family's involvement in additional business operations continued after Donald Hipperson took primary control of the businesses in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Donald further established companies such as Hipperson Investments Ltd., Hipperson Holdings Ltd., and D.K.H. Enterprises Ltd., but the family has subsequently divested itself of its involvement in the farming and fur operations and Regina Sash and Door and Hy-Grade Millwork. Gordon Hipperson has continued many of the family businesses, including restructuring Hipperson Construction as a new corporation, Hipperson Construction Company (1996) Ltd.

William Hipperson died in Regina on April 2, 1966. Margaret Hipperson died on January 20, 1990. Donald K. and Nancy E. Hipperson currently (2010) live in Regina.

William Henry Reed Family, 1869-1950

William Henry Reed was born in Bruce County, Ontario on October 4, 1869. He later moved with his parents to the Brandon, Manitoba district, where the family engaged in farming. Reed then worked as a grain buyer and salesman for the Sylvester Farm Machinery Company. As a salesman, he traveled to South Africa and various points in Western Canada to introduce machinery.

Reed married Eliza Nelles, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lonsdale Nelles, on April 5, 1893. Annie Elizabeth (Eliza) Nelles was born in Cayuga, Ontario on May 3, 1873. The Reeds settled in Wapella, Saskatchewan, where W.H. Reed worked as a salesman for Kidd and Clements. Reed also farmed in the Rosa Glen district. In 1908, the Reeds moved into Wapella, where W.H. Reed operated a flour and feed business, shipped livestock and worked as an auctioneer.

William and Eliza Reed had four children: Eva; Henrietta; Marion and Nelles. William Reed died in 1936. Eliza Reed died around 1950.

Dow farmed at Whitby until around 1889, when he moved near Portage La Prairie, Manitoba to take up farming. In 1903, he moved to the Ruddell, North-West Territories (now known as Saskatchewan) district, where he farmed until his death on January 8, 1937.

William Dow married Annie McAllan on September 24, 1873 in Whitby. William and Annie Dow had six children: Isabella; Marion; Margaret; Annie; John and James. Isabella Dow, born on June 15, 1875, died in 1948. Marion Kathleen, born on February 23, 1877, was a teacher and married Thomas Pain, with whom she had three children: Harold, Thomas and Arthur. Marion died in 1960. Margaret Josephine, born on September 17, 1878, was a teacher and married Carney Ferry, with whom she had two children: Marion and William. Margaret Josephine died in 1922. Annie Jardine, born on March 23, 1880, died on December 10, 1974. James, born on March 15, 1882, is believed to have died in infancy.

John Dow was born on March 15, 1882. Around 1904, he homesteaded in the Ruddell, Saskatchewan district. He served in World War I and married Marjorie Rake in 1918 while overseas. The Dows returned to the Ruddell district in 1919 and resided on the farm until 1938, when they moved to Saskatoon. The Dows had four children: Herbert J. (born 1920); Nora; David and Marjorie Elizabeth (married name Delahey). John Dow died in September 1969 and Marjorie Dow died on December 30, 1974. Herbert Dow worked in the insurance and financial management industries in Regina until the mid 1990s, when he and his wife, Frances, moved to Saskatoon. In 2018, David was deceased and Herbert, Nora and Marjorie were residing in Saskatoon.

William Cronyn McCheane Family, 1841-

William Cronyn McCheane was born in Birmingham, England on January 26, 1841. He was a member of the Fritchley Meeting of the Society of Friends (Quakers). William McCheane married Caroline Mettam in Birmingham on April 2, 1869. Caroline Mettam was born in Taddington, Derbyshire, England on September 18, 1841 to James and Mary Mettam. William and Caroline McCheane had six children: Lydia, Catherine (died 1894), Hannah Mary, John, William, and Edward Cronyn.

William McCheane and his son John immigrated to Canada in 1903 and settled in a district near Borden, Saskatchewan. William named the district Halcyonia. He was granted patent to a homestead at NW14-40-8-W3. He returned to England, bringing the rest of the family to Halcyonia in 1904. William McCheane operated the first post office in the district. He established the Halcyonia Meeting of the Society of Friends, and held meetings in his house until a meeting house was built around 1915. William McCheane remained in the Halcyonia district until his death in Borden on December 6, 1923.

Edward Cronyn McCheane was born in England on January 16, 1883 to William Cronyn and Caroline (Mettam) McCheane. He was accepted as a member of the Fritchley Meeting of the Society of Friends in 1883. He immigrated to Canada with his family and settled in the Halcyonia district near Borden. Edward McCheane married Edith Mary Hinde in Borden on September 1, 1920. Edward and Edith McCheane resided in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where Edward ran a commercial art studio. They had one son, Gordon Edward. Edward McCheane died in Saskatoon on June 12, 1946. Edith McCheane returned to her family's ranch where she lived until her death in Borden on October 22, 1961.

W.H.E. Schuette Family, 1885-

Wilhelm Henry Edward Schuette was born in 1885 in Staunton, Illinois. He moved to Canada in 1907 and settled in the Pense, Saskatchewan district, where he operated a farm. He owned the land on SW and NW 12-17-22-W2. Schuette applied for a homestead in the Norquay district (SW 32-35-31-W1) on July 30, 1914 but later cancelled his application.

Schuette and his wife, Ida May, had seven children: Witte, Juneeta, Florence, Edna, Julia and two children that died in infancy.

W.H.E. Schuette died on November 1, 1969. Ida May Schuette died on December 16, 1982. Witte Schuette died in 1980 and Florence Schuette died on July 31, 1993. They are all buried in Riverside Memorial Park in Regina.

Walter Frederick Budd family, 1884-

Walter Frederick Budd was born on July 2, 1884 in Beeding, Sussex, England. He came to Canada in 1898 and eventually settled in the Pense, Saskatchewan district. Budd married Mildred Lawton in 1910. They moved to a homestead in the Hodgeville district before settling in Regina, where Walter Budd worked as a carpenter. The Budds had five children: Walter Clement (Clem) (1912-1988); Beth Evelyn (1914-2003); Nellie Edythe (1916-2011); Cyril Maynard (1919-2005) and Vivian.

In 1931, the Walter Budd family formed an old-time orchestra called Walter Budd and His Blossoms. Mildred and Edythe played the piano; Maynard played the drums; Beth was the vocalist; and Walter and Clem played the violins. The orchestra played weekly sets of old-time dance music at the Trianon Ballroom in Regina and Temple Gardens in Moose Jaw and was a feature artist on CJRM Radio in Regina. The orchestra underwent major changes in 1934, when professional musicians were hired and they began to play more modern music. The orchestra continued to perform until 1948, when Walter Budd retired and accepted employment at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building. He remained in that position until 1955 and died in Regina on October 12, 1959. Mildred Budd died in 1979.

W. Clement (Clem) Budd married Janet Antoinette LeFlem, daughter of William LeFlem and Helen (Simpson) LeFlem on June 28, 1941 in Regina. Clem and Janet were both professional violinists active in the musical community in Regina until 1959, when they moved to Victoria, British Columbia.

Van Hullebusch Family, 1854-

Victor Van Hullebusch was born in Knesselare, Belgium on April 3, 1854. He married Marie Louise Cannoot on September 9, 1885 in Knesselare. Marie Cannoot was born on August 28, 1865 in Knesselare. Victor and Marie Van Hullebusch had eight children: Rene, Rosalie, Marie, Edmont, Cornelius, Maurits, Raymond and Camillius. Marie Van Hullebusch died on September 7, 1904, less than three months after the birth of her eighth child.

In 1906, Victor and Rene Van Hullebusch moved to North America while the remaining children were sent to live with family and friends. Victor Van Hullebusch returned to Belgium three years later and lived with his daughter Rosalie until his death, while Rene remained in North America. Rene Van Hullebush lived and worked first in East Moline, Illinois and then moved to Manitoba to work as a field labourer. He later moved to the Redfield, Saskatchewan district where he farmed.

Marie Augusta Verstraete was born in Halluin, France on September 23, 1898 to Alphonse and Pauline Verstraete. As a toddler, Marie Verstraete became the charge of her uncle and aunt, Henri and Marie Goethals. In 1912, Henri and Marie Goethals and Marie Verstraete immigrated to Canada. They settled in the Redfield district where Henri Goethals was granted patent to a homestead at SW14-46-13-W3 on December 6, 1916.

Rene Van Hullebush and Marie Verstraete were married on June 3, 1916 in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. They lived on land near that of Henri and Marie Goethals. In 1918, the Van Hullebushs and the Goethals moved closer to North Battleford and purchased farm land that they named Flanders Farm in honour of their Belgian homeland. Henri and Marie Goethals died on October 13, 1937 and February 12, 1945, respectively.

Between 1918 and 1932, Rene and Marie Van Hullebush had seven children: Julienne, Yvonne, Gustave, Alice, Marguerite, Janice and Raymond. They lived at Flanders Farm until 1955. Upon sale of their farm, they purchased half ownership and eventually full ownership of the Townmann British American gas station in North Battleford and lived on land adjacent to the station. Rene Van Hullebush died on December 29, 1956 in North Battleford. Marie Van Hullebush sold the business in 1958 and in the years following moved to locales in British Columbia (Penticton, Revelstoke, Port Alberni, Kelowna) to be closer to her family and then to Edmonton, Alberta, shortly before her death on August 24, 1980.

Throughout her years living in Canada, Marie Van Hullebush kept in touch with her family back in France. In particular, she corresponded with her sister Julienne and her family. Julienne Verstraete was born May 30, 1900 and married Prosper Schout on September 24, 1923 in Halluin, France. They had two children: Josette and Christiane.

Rosalie Sylvia Reis, granddaughter of Rene and Marie Van Hullebush, was born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan on May 25, 1949 to Yvonne (Van Hullebush) and Frank Reis. She married Albertus Wegerink on February 24, 1968 in Port Alberni, British Columbia. They have two children: Ronald and Stacy. Curiousity about her grandfather, Rene Van Hullebush, led her in 1982 to begin a search into her family history. She has since collected genealogical information and photographs about her family and has produced family history books in 2005 and 2007. Rosalie and Al Wegerink continue (2008) to live in Port Alberni where they operate a bed and breakfast inn.
